The Memories Inside

She thought she was over him,

a year had passed between them.

Yet when she saw his face

she still froze in place.

How long does it take

to burn the memories inside

the double-faced die

the old, worn-out lie.

The minutes they shared

were not to be compared

to an overdue meal,

a wrinkled brochure.

They all came up empty

when it came to her heart.

Sometimes the simplest thing

holds the greatest sting.
